A drink driver has been sentenced after a crash left a young mum and her child with serious injuries. The incident occurred in Essex last year.
After the wreck, he ditched his car and ran away, leaving his passenger behind. The driver of a VW Polo, a woman in her 20s, and her young child were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Kirkham later returned to the scene while police were investigating.
He failed a breathalyser test and was arrested for causing serious injury by dangerous driving. CCTV footage showed his red BMW speeding before the crash. At Southend Magistrates’ Court, he admitted to four charges.
On January 14, he was sentenced to 30 months in prison at Basildon Crown Court. He also has to pay £4,000 in compensation and costs. His driving ban lasts for 39 months, and he must retake his driving test.
PC Adem Harman emphasized that drink driving is illegal and dangerous. He reminded everyone that alcohol impairs judgment and slows reactions, putting others at risk.
