An East Lothian dad is fuming after his £4,200 car purchase broke down just 28 miles into the drive home, leaving his family stranded.
East Lothian: A dad named Connor Mclean Stibbles is really upset. He bought a used car for £4,200 on Facebook, thinking it was a good deal. But guess what? It broke down less than an hour later.
Connor’s family needed a car badly. Their last one was wrecked in an accident, leaving them without a ride. They live in Whittingehame, far from the nearest village and without any bus service.
With three kids to care for, including an 11-year-old daughter who has a brain condition, they needed a reliable vehicle. Connor shared his frustration with Edinburgh Live, saying he felt lost and confused about the whole situation.
He found the car on Facebook and chatted with the seller, who claimed it was in great shape. The seller even asked Connor to meet him in Livingston and pay into a different bank account. That should have raised some alarms.
After picking up the car, they drove just 28 miles before it started making weird noises. It eventually stopped, leaving them stranded on the roadside. They had to call for help from the RAC.
Mechanics later told Connor that the car had engine issues that likely existed before he bought it. He realized he missed some red flags, but they were desperate for a car.
Financially, things are tough for them. They recently invested in a bakery franchise, spending most of their savings. Losing £4,200 on a car is a huge blow.
Connor admitted he was naive, expecting the car to at least get them home. The seller has denied any wrongdoing and has stopped responding to him.
Police Scotland is looking into the situation, but it’s still early days. Connor just wants to warn others about the risks of buying used cars online.
