Edinburgh: A restaurant owner is feeling the heat. Carmen runs Sushiya on Dalry Road. She’s worried about the recent closures of popular spots like KORA and Umai.

She was shocked to see these businesses shut down. It’s tough out there, and she hopes locals will keep supporting her restaurant. She wants to keep her staff employed.

Carmen shared her concerns with Edinburgh Live. She said, “It’s really worrying. I feel scared about the economic climate.” When Umai closed, she couldn’t believe it. They always seemed busy.

She’s anxious about the future. It’s hard to tell if changing habits are to blame. Maybe Japanese food isn’t as trendy anymore. But her main worry is her team. She wants to ensure they have steady hours.

“Supporting local is so important,” she said. Carmen prefers local ingredients, like salmon, in her dishes. She hopes customers will choose to eat local, too.

Sushiya opened in 2023, originally named Miju. After a year, Carmen decided to rebrand and focus on sushi. She wanted to create a unique dining experience for her customers.

She noticed regulars were trying everything on the menu. So, she aimed to keep things fresh and exciting. “We just want to bond with our customers,” she added.
