A scenic byway in Essex is now closed due to safety concerns after offroad drivers attempted a risky river crossing
They said it’s not safe for vehicles and could harm the river’s ecosystem. A local plan mentioned that 4×4 vehicles have caused serious damage to the area.
The byway, which connects Back Lane and the B1008, was open to everyone. But not many people used it because of the river’s depth. There’s a footpath nearby for walkers, and cyclists have alternative routes.
The council had already closed the byway temporarily in 2021. They noted that there have only been two attempts to drive across the river in the last 25 years.
The decision aims to protect both users and the environment. While some drivers might not be happy, it aligns with local feelings and environmental goals.
Byways make up a small part of the public rights-of-way network. The council is aware of the damage motor vehicles can cause. They try to find solutions before closing routes.
