Dovercourt’s old fire station commander’s house will be demolished soon for a new police station, enhancing local policing facilities.
This is all to make way for a new two-storey police station. The plans for this station got the green light back in October 2023. It will serve as an operational base but won’t have a public front counter.
Currently, there are police stations in Clacton-on-Sea and Colchester. Essex Police believes the officers need a station that meets today’s policing needs.
Demolition is set to start on January 27. Deputy Chief Constable Rachel Nolan mentioned that the old Harwich Police Station was built in 1914. It’s high time for a modern facility that fits today’s requirements.
Thanks to teamwork, crime rates have dropped by 8.2% and anti-social behavior by 10% in Harwich. The new station will be on the same site as the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, allowing for better collaboration.
Chief Inspector Ella Latham reassured the community that the police presence in Harwich and Dovercourt will remain strong.
Karl Edwards from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said this project is a big step forward. It’s their first joint site with Essex Police, aiming for a more efficient service.
Roger Hirst, the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, expressed his excitement about the new police base. He noted the hard work from all partners to reach this important milestone for community safety.
