Exciting plans are underway to transform former artist studios into student housing in Edinburgh, promising modern living spaces for students.
Edinburgh: Big changes are coming to the city. Plans are in motion to turn old artist studios into student housing. It’s a fresh start for the site at 2-3 West Park Place.
Last year, about 50 tenants had to move out. Now, Sungate Ventures Ltd and Viridis Real Estate want to build 134 student beds. They’ve submitted their plans to the council.
In 2021, a charity bought the property for just £1. They had a long lease on the old factory buildings. The sale helped them buy a new studio space for artists.
Now, the new development will have six storeys. Out of the 134 beds, 10% will be studios. The rest will be cluster and accessible beds. It sounds like a great setup!
The main entrance will be on West Park Place. There will be a reception area and a communal space for students. Plus, they’re not including car parking to promote cycling and walking.
The current building is in bad shape. It’s unoccupied and has serious structural issues. The previous landlord’s engineers even marked one corner as unsafe.
So, it’s clear this new project is needed. The plans are available on the council’s planning portal if anyone wants to check them out.
