Maldon Council aims to dredge Hythe Quay to help iconic Thames barges navigate safely and boost local tourism
They’re looking to spend about £135,000 on this project. The goal is to improve the quay and the visiting pontoon, which is a popular spot for tourists. The dredging will stretch from the Maritime Centre to The Queen’s Head Pub.
It’s been a while since the last major dredging. The last time was back in 2016, and they did some work in 2019. The council says if they don’t act soon, things will only get worse for the barges and other boats.
They’re set to discuss this plan at a meeting on January 23. The council believes these barges are a key part of the local heritage. Dredging will help keep them around and support local businesses.
The project will involve working with various groups, including the Maldon Harbour Improvement Commissioners and the National Trust. They want to make sure it’s done efficiently and provides good value for the community.
