A Southend school has reduced its teaching assistants due to financial issues, raising concerns about support for students with special needs.
Teaching assistants play a crucial role. They help teachers, especially with students who have special needs. The school recently improved its Ofsted rating, but now it’s struggling again.
Tracy Airoll, the headteacher, explained the cuts. She said financial issues forced the school to restructure. Four teaching assistant positions were eliminated.
Despite the cuts, she reassured that the remaining assistants are doing great work. No teachers lost their jobs, and they won’t take on assistant duties. The school aims to keep supporting students with special needs.
Laurie Burton, a local councillor, expressed concern. He believes the school should focus on reducing management costs instead. He thinks teaching assistants are essential, especially for students needing extra help.
Southchurch High School serves 794 students aged 11 to 16. It was previously known as Futures Community College. After a recent inspection, the school is making progress in key areas like the curriculum.
