Mersea: This lovely island in Essex is becoming a favorite for many. People are moving there, saying it feels like stepping into a holiday every day. It’s got this charming vibe that just pulls you in.

Debbi Lynn, 52, and her husband made the move 18 months ago. She says it’s like they’re still on vacation. “Everyone here cares about the community. It’s just brilliant,” she shared.

They first visited Mersea for a day and fell in love. The island is connected to the mainland by a causeway, which splits it into East and West Mersea. West Mersea is known for its fishing village and oyster farms.

But a heads up: the causeway gets covered by the tide twice a day, so plan your trips carefully. The island offers a peaceful atmosphere and stunning views of the Blackwater Estuary.

There are beautiful spots all around the coastline. Debbi was surprised by how calm the beach was, saying it wasn’t crowded at all. Hilka Fraser, 75, who moved there a year ago, agrees. She finds it mostly quiet, even in summer.

After losing her husband, Hilka was drawn to the island’s beautiful beaches. She loves being near the water, which lets her enjoy walks and cycling along the coast.

With just 7,000 residents, you can walk around the whole island in about three hours. It’s a mix of beaches, farmland, and parks, making it perfect for outdoor lovers.

Andrea Bilton, who grew up vacationing there, says, “West Mersea feels like a whole other world. Life here is just one big holiday.”
