Upminster: There’s a big debate going on about whether this town is in Essex or London. It’s a hot topic that gets people fired up!

Technically, Upminster is in the London Borough of Havering. But many locals feel it’s all about Essex. They say it has that Essex vibe, no doubt.

Originally an Essex town, Upminster joined Greater London back in 1965. It still has that charming rural feel, but the town center is buzzing like London.

We chatted with some folks in Upminster to get their take. Many who think it’s London point to the train station and all the London buses around.

Upminster train station is a gem for commuters. It’s on the c2c line and the District Line, making it super convenient. Plus, those red London buses are everywhere!

Ian Redhouse, a long-time resident, gets the confusion. He’s lived there for 73 years and feels Upminster is more London now. He says, “We pay taxes to a London borough, so it’s London for me.”

Sheila Skinner, who’s been in Upminster for 23 years, agrees. She says, “We’re on the District Line, and the buses are all London. It’s definitely more London these days.”

A local worker chimed in, saying people debate this all the time. “Areas like Dagenham and Harold Wood are in London now. It’s been 60 years; time to move on!”

But not everyone sees it that way. Kelly, who’s lived there for 15 years, insists, “My address says Upminster, Essex. That’s how it’s always been!”

A passerby added, “It’s so close to Essex. Brentwood is just a few minutes away. People cling to their Essex roots.”

Nooreen Jafferkhan, who owns a cocktail bar, feels the same. “Upminster is Essex. It doesn’t even have a London postcode!”

So, the debate rages on! Upminster residents are split, with some loving the London life and others holding tight to their Essex identity.
