Great Dunmow’s abandoned railway station has been replaced by a major road, marking a significant change in the town’s landscape.
Great Dunmow: Essex has a rich railway history. Some stations were vital during the Second World War. Others were busy hubs for daily commuters.
But not all stations are still in use. One, in particular, has been turned into a major road. Dunmow railway station used to serve Great Dunmow.
It opened on February 22, 1869, thanks to some local businessmen. They wanted a way to transport malt and barley from nearby towns.
Over the years, more stations popped up, but Dunmow struggled to make money. During the war, it helped move rubble for Saling airfield.
After the war, it transported wounded soldiers home. But as cars became popular, the trains ran empty.
Regular services ended in 1952, and the station closed in 1961. By 1969, it stopped handling goods too.
Now, you wouldn’t even know it was there. The area is now Flitch Way, a path for walking and cycling. The old tracks are gone, replaced by the B1256 Dunmow Bypass.
