Joan Renton, a cherished Scottish artist, has passed away at 89, leaving behind a rich legacy in the art world.
Edinburgh: A beloved Scottish artist, Joan Renton, has died at 89. She had a remarkable career in the Edinburgh and East Lothian art scenes.
Joan was born in Sunderland and started her art journey at 17. She studied at the Edinburgh College of Art under the famous William Gillies.
Her paintings were known for their emotional depth. Joan played a key role in promoting women’s art in Scotland.
In 1959, she received a scholarship to travel to Spain. This experience influenced her work for decades.
Joan lived in Gullane for over 30 years, where she taught art to the community. She also led the Scottish Society of Artists and the Scottish Society of Women Artists.
In 1990, she pushed for changes in the women’s art organization, making it more inclusive. This led to a rebranding that welcomed male artists.
Her son, Jonathan, shared how much Joan influenced Scottish art, especially for women. He said she was proud of her role in shaping their identity.
Jonathan remembers her as a high achiever who was always kind and curious about others. She found beauty in everything, even in her garden.
Joan’s favorite painting of Jonathan’s was an abstract seascape. After it sold, she painted him a copy because she knew he loved it.
Joan is survived by her three children and five grandchildren, three of whom are pursuing art. Jonathan feels her creative spirit lives on through them.
A service will be held on January 29 at 1pm at Lorimer Chapel, Warriston Crematorium. The family invites everyone to pay their respects.
Guests are encouraged to wear lavender or purple, Joan’s favorite color. Her artwork has been displayed in various Scottish venues and even in galleries abroad.
