Midlothian Council is in talks to help a local firm downsize while keeping jobs in the area, but uncertainty looms over their future.
At a recent planning meeting, it was revealed that the company is looking for smaller premises. Most of their workforce is from Midlothian, but it’s unclear if they can stay.
Peter Arnsdorf, the planning boss, mentioned they’re supporting the firm and its staff. He said they’re in early discussions about the company’s plans to move.
Letts has been in Midlothian since the Sixties, moving from London to escape a tough workforce. They currently use only a third of their large building.
The site’s owners want to build housing on the land, but that idea didn’t sit well with the council. Councillor Stephen Curran expressed concerns about the impact on local schools and GP services.
Councillor Peter Smaill shared the company’s long history, noting they moved to Scotland for a more stable workforce. Councillor Stuart McKenzie raised questions about what might replace Letts if they leave.
Arnsdorf emphasized the need for developments that create jobs while fitting into the residential area. The council is gathering feedback before any formal planning application is submitted.
Charles Letts and Co have been asked for their thoughts on the situation.
